What Public Relations is not
One thing PR is not about is "spin", or covering up and concealing disasters.
As the old saying goes in the PR business: "You can't pour perfume on a skunk".
What PR is about is the planned management of two-way communication with a variety of audiences, in strategic support of your organization's goals.
It all works best on a foundation of good performance, good products, good service and good attitude. Those things are essential to get the public on your side. And it is so true that that "You have only one chance to make a first impression."
The trick then is to keep public opinion on your side.
And that's not easy. For one thing, "public opinion" is not a singular noun. The "general public" is a kaleidoscope of individuals and groups, each with their own opinions and priorities. And public opinion is subject to change, sometimes with stunning speed.
Your communications and public relations need not merely to keep up with public opinion, but to be out in front, anticipating change and even leading it.
You and your organization have public relations, whether you want them or not. The trick is to have and maintain good public relations
